Hatred of City Politics?

rsz_dscn0267Hi SweetPeas!  I was asking Jessy the other day if we knew any queers in city politics.  Neither of us could think of one person currently on council or on committee that was also an open homosexual.  Now, maybe we just don’t know every gay in town.  But I’d say that between Jessy and I, we have a good monopoly on the homosexuals.  :)

That begs to question.  Why aren’t there any open queers involved in the politics of the City of Kingston?  Are we just not interested?  Or are we focused on other ventures such as queer community events or provincial and federal politics?  Is there a hatred of city politics?

Many of us long time resident queers remember times that our city council did not respect us.  There were many many years where the mayor did not proclaim let alone announce during Pride in city park that Kingston had gays.  Is that where our hatred lies?  City council doesn’t recognize us so therefore we shouldn’t recognize it?  I think that may be true to some extent but doesn’t explain the whole story.

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve mentioned on the Queer Forum some community/city events that could use a little queerness to the mix.  There are many opportunities if you take a close look at the City of Kingston website and twitter.  I think that if the gay community got involved in city politics we might be heard a bit more.  There won’t be that cold divide.  Who knows, we may even be able to have a mayor come down to Kingston Pride and talk about pride instead of the KRock Centre.
